Kuzuzangpo and warm Welcome to Bhutan! On arrival at Paro International Airport, your guide will greet you upon exiting the arrival hall.

Paro Valley (2,200 meters) is home of many old monasteries, temples and sacred sites.  In the afternoon we visit Paro Rinpung Dzong (Fortress of Jewels).  Located at the edge of Paro Town, this impressive Bhutanese architecture now serves as the local government centre of Paro.

We then visit nearby Ta Dzong (Watchtower) which was built in 1649 and converted into the National Museum of Bhutan in 1968. Here we can view antiques, art, textiles, weapons and household items offering a glimpse of Bhutan’s fascinating history.

We end the day with a visit to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest in Bhutan. According to legend, a giant demoness laid her body across the Himalayas to prevent the spread of Buddhism. Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo built 108 temples to subdue and pin down demoness that was obstructing the spread of Buddhism and with Kyichu Lhakhang built to hold down her left foot.Next to the temple is the house that is turned into a museum dedicated to the late Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.

In the morning, we will hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang), Bhutan's most iconic landmark and sacred site. Perched 900 meters above the Paro Valley, it was first built in 1692 at the cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated in the 8th century. Located about 10 km north of Paro at an altitude of 3,100 meters, the hike to Taktsang takes roughly two and a half hours, passing through beautiful pine forests.

After lunch, we’ll drive to Drukgyel Dzong, once a key fortress and the starting point for ancient trekking routes. Although in ruins, it is being reconstructed into an iconic structure. From here, we'll continue to the military camp at Gunitsawa along the newly built road. We’ll camp for the night just above the military camp at an elevation of 2,890 meters.

Distance 16 km
Time 7-8 hours
Ascent Ascent 770 m, descent 10 m
Camp Altitude 3,610 m

This is a long day with plenty of ups and downs, mostly trekking through dense forest along the Paro Chhu River. As we ascend, the valley narrows, becoming steeper and wilder, with the trail winding up and down along the river's drainage. The rugged terrain adds to the adventure as we move deeper into the landscape.

We’ll pass a junction where another path leads over the Tremo La Pass into Tibet, a reminder of the ancient trade routes that once connected these regions. After another half hour of trekking, we reach the Thangthangtha campsite. If the weather is clear, this is the perfect spot to catch your first stunning view of Jomolhari, and an ideal time for photography.

Be prepared for colder conditions here, as the camp is at a high altitude, and it tends to get dark early, making for a cozy and serene end to the day.

Distance 10 km
Time 5-6 hours
Ascent Ascent 480 m,
Camp Altitude 4080 m

We’ll begin our trek with a stunning view of Jomolhari Peak, one of the most prominent mountains in Bhutan, as we follow the Paro Chhu Valley. The valley gradually widens into beautiful alpine meadows with patches of forest, giving way to vast, open landscapes. As we ascend, we pass through an army checkpoint, where the scenery becomes even more dramatic, with towering ridges and snow-capped peaks dominating the horizon.

As we move further, you’ll notice yaks grazing in the meadows and traditional herder homes, a common sight in this high-altitude region. These yak herders live a nomadic life, moving with their animals across the rugged terrain, offering a glimpse into their unique lifestyle. Along the way, we’ll pass through charming villages like Soe, Takethang, and Dangochang, where you'll witness the simplicity of rural Bhutanese life amid the high mountains.

Our destination for the day is Jangothang, one of the most beautiful campsites in the entire Himalayas, situated at the foot of Jomolhari. Surrounded by high peaks and ancient ruins of temples or fortresses, Jangothang offers an awe-inspiring view of Jomolhari standing majestically in the distance. The sight of the snow-capped peak glowing in the late afternoon light, framed by ancient stone structures, creates an unforgettable end to the day’s trek. You'll have time to explore the area, take in the stunning landscape, and prepare for the next day's adventure in this serene and magical setting.

The rest day at Jangothang offers many opportunities for day hikes with stunning views of lakes and snow-capped mountains like Jomolhari and Jichu Drakey. It's an excellent spot for acclimatization, with a perfect high-altitude environment. You may also have a chance to spot blue sheep on the upper slopes of the valley.

For those interested in exploring further, there are several short hiking trails in different directions. To the west, you'll see Jomolhari and its surrounding mountain chains, while to the north lies Jichu Drakey. To the east, you'll find a number of unclimbed peaks, adding to the sense of adventure and discovery in this pristine wilderness. You can also trek up to Tshophu Lake or simply enjoy the peaceful beauty of the area as you prepare for the next leg of your journey.

Distance 16 km
Time 6-7 hours
Ascent Ascent 810 m, descent 1,090 m
Camp Altitude 3,800 m

The trail takes you through the stunning landscapes of the valley, gradually descending to the Paro Chhu river, where you can enjoy the peaceful sound of the flowing water. As we continue, the path ascends towards the beautiful Tshophu Lake at 4,380 meters. The turquoise waters of the lake, set against a backdrop of rugged mountains, offer a perfect spot for a short rest and to soak in the serene beauty of the area.

From here, the trail becomes more challenging as we begin the steep ascent to the Bhonte La Pass at 4,890 meters, the highest point of our trek. This demanding climb rewards us with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, offering a sense of accomplishment as we stand at this lofty altitude.

After crossing the pass, we descend to the Dhumzo Chhu river, following the trail downstream. Along the way, we pass a few traditional houses in the remote settlement of Soi Yaktsa (Dhumzo), a small yak-herding community that exemplifies the quiet, pastoral life in Bhutan’s highlands.

As we approach our campsite, surrounded by the rugged beauty of the mountains, you’ll have the chance to rest and reflect on the day's journey. The camp is set in a tranquil spot, offering a peaceful atmosphere to enjoy the stunning mountain scenery as we prepare for the next stage of our adventure.

Distance 11km
Time 4-5 hours
Ascent Ascent 720m, descent 340 m
Camp Altitude 4,180 m

The trail begins with a 100-meter climb over a ridge, rewarding us with beautiful views of the surrounding valleys before it drops down to another stream. As we continue, the landscape shifts to more rugged and isolated terrain. We then ascend towards the Takhung La Pass, standing at 4,520 meters. From the pass, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the distant snow-capped peaks and the expansive valleys below.

After crossing the pass, the trail descends into a high-altitude meadow known as Thombu Shong, where you’ll spot three yak herder huts nestled in the landscape. These huts are part of the traditional lifestyle of the yak herders, who spend months in these remote areas tending to their animals. Our campsite will be set next to these huts, offering a serene and quiet atmosphere, with the surrounding mountains and the occasional sight of yaks grazing nearby. This tranquil setting, with its open skies and crisp mountain air, makes for a perfect end to the day's trek.

The trail winds down towards Gunitsawa, marking the end of this adventurous trek.

Upon reaching Gunitsawa, our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Paro, where we can relax and reflect on the incredible journey we've completed. After several days of trekking through Bhutan's remote mountains and valleys, the comfort of the hotel in Paro will offer a warm and welcome respite. This evening, you’ll have time to unwind and enjoy the tranquil surroundings, preparing for the next chapter of your Bhutan adventure.

In the morning, we’ll drive to Thimphu, stopping at Tachog Lhakhang to see the ancient iron chain bridge, reconstructed using chains originally forged by the legendary saint and bridge builder Thangtong Gyalpo.

Upon arrival in Thimphu, we’ll visit the stunning Buddha Dordenma (Buddha Point) in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, where a giant Buddha statue overlooks the city. Next, we’ll head to the National Memorial Chorten, where local worshippers gather to circumambulate and socialize, offering a glimpse of daily spiritual life in Bhutan.

We’ll then take a stroll along Norzin Lam Street, observing the famous traffic police at work, as Thimphu remains the only capital in the world without traffic lights. You’ll also have time to explore the local handicraft market, where you can find beautiful Bhutanese souvenirs at reasonable prices.

Our next stop is the Textile Museum, showcasing both ancient and contemporary examples of Bhutan’s rich textile tradition. Following this, we’ll visit Tashichho Dzong, the grand fortress that serves as the seat of Bhutan’s king and government.

In the late afternoon, we’ll drive back to Paro, where you’ll have some free time for shopping before we gather for a special farewell dinner to celebrate the end of our journey.

Boarding a morning flight from Paro International Airport, we bid a fond farewell to this beautiful Himalayan country, taking with us cherished memories of Bhutan! We wish you a safe and happy journey and look forward to meeting again in Druk Yul – a land of endless Enchantments! Tashi Delek!
